GRK Suomi Oy – Hailuoto bridge (ongoing)

In the future, it will be possible to reach Hailuoto directly by car when a permanent road connection is built between Oulu and Hailuoto. The project is a collaboration involving the Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency (Väylävirasto), with GRK Suomi Oy as the contractor and AFRY along with A-Insinöörit subsidiaries Plaana and Ponvia as the designers. The key structures of the road connection are two bridges: Riuttu bridge and Huikku bridge.

Huikku bridge is a composite beam bridge with a concrete deck and steel beams forming a joint load-bearing structure. Riuttu bridge features a prestressed concrete load-bearing structure. Special attention has been paid in the design to ensure that the unique landscape of Hailuoto remains as unchanged as possible. Huikku bridge on the Hailuoto side is 767 meters long, with a free clearance height of over 18 meters, making it an exceptionally large waterway bridge.

The manufacturing and installation of the steel structures for Huikku bridge will be carried out by Steel Group Pohjanmaa Oy. The contract covers the entire production and installation of the steel structures, and the project represents a significant addition to the company’s order book.

Manufacturing will start in October 2024, with installations starting at the construction site in the spring of 2025.
